deserted

i look left
& rails & crossties
lined by bright white
& deep blue lights
disappear
to a fine point
centered in pitch black

i look right
& rails & crossties
lined by bright white
& translucent green lights
disappear
to a fine point
fading in stark pale yellow

i see no trains

I can see that your poetry has many different faces, or one could say that it is expressed in many different genres. When you are funny, you are hilarious. When you are sad, you are tragic. When you are romantic, you are divine.
This poem, however, shows one of my favorite aspects of your writing, and that is the existential, the metaphysical. The tracks fading into pitch black on one side and stark pale yellow on the other to me symbolize the opposites of the light and the dark, the truth and illusion. It is reminiscent of your work in Twixt with the light bulb and the drain.
But while Twixt looks at the condition of our existence with a smile, deserted explores a different experience of that same existence. Here I am connected with a feeling that comes when the smile fades, and we look on our situation with naked sobriety. It can be a very sobering thought indeed. But that moment, that realization, that experience of human existence, is expressed in this piece. And I for one, was able to connect with it. but then again, that is just one man's reading.

Lee, if I had a literary magazine I would hire you to write the poetry reviews! It's amazing how much you can find in one poem.
Most people would not look so deeply or explain so clearly.
Thanks for sharing your vision.

Poetry reviews! Hmmmm, that would be a great way to pick up some extra cash!
